Sim Racing finale is a huge hit a Yas Mall, hometown favorites YAS HEAT miss out on final place by narrowest of margins
Prize pool topping £100,000 was on offer at the conclusion to Abu Dhabi Gaming Month
Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, UAE, 26 July, 2022: Mercedes AMG Esports has been crowned champions in season three of the V10 R-League series after a thrilling finals weekend at Yas Mall, Abu Dhabi.
The team qualified for the finals weekend through the wildcard playoff but beat home team YAS HEAT in the semifinals before seeing off the pre-weekend favorites Team Redline, backed by reigning F1 World Champion Max Verstappen, in the final.
Produced by Abu Dhabi Motorsport Management (ADMM) and Gfinity, and facilitated by partnerships with Miral Group, Abu Dhabi Gaming and Etihad Airways, the event was one of the first global esports events to be held in person with a live crowd since the global Covid-19 pandemic.
Ahead of the finals, teams had battled through five tough weeks of online group matches – with all four – Mercedes, Team Redline, YAS HEAT, and R8G - Roman Grosjean’s eSports team, eying the total prize pool of more than £100,000.
Friday’s semifinals saw Team Redline see off the challenge of R8G, which Mercedes broke YAS HEAT hearts with the narrowest of victories.
The first race in their series was voided due to hardware issues, so when the contest finished tied at 2-2, it was Mercedes superior results in the Team Races which saw them qualify.
They would then go on to defeat Team Redline in the final, with YAS HEAT claiming third spot overall.
Abu Dhabi Motorsport Management (ADMM) CEO Saif al Noaimi was delighted with the success of the event and congratulated the victorious Mercedes team.
“Season three of V10 R-League has been superb from start to finish,” he said. “Sim Racing is a hugely important part of driver development and a growing spectator sport around the world.
“To host the finals weekend here in Abu Dhabi was a huge thrill for us, as esports starts to see in-person events returning following the pandemic.
“We have seen some incredible talent on display, and real credit goes to the Mercedes team for taking the title.
“Each season of the V10 R-League has seen growth and development, we thank everyone who has taken part and supported season three and can’t wait for more of the same when season four starts.”
As a regular feature in the training and development of the current and next generation of on-track driving talent across motorsports, Sim Racing allows drivers to replicate their driving performance via simulation in order to perfect their techniques and strategies for race day.
